Assignment #4
In "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini, Nana always told Miriam that Jalil was never there for them and Miriam shouldn't trust him. Miriam was desperate to be close to Jalil, but Nana would ruin Miriam's hopes and dreams. Nana and Miriam always felt left out of Jalil's life because on the holiday, Eid-ul-Fitr, Jalil was always "off to celebrate Eid with his real family." (79) After Nana's passing, one would think it would be easier for Miriam to become closer to Jalil, but Miriam felt that she had to say her goodbyes to him. (55) Discuss why Miriam was never accepted into Jalil's real family, even after Nana had passed, who was stopping Jalil and Miriam's relationship from blossoming.

Mariam was never accepted into her father Jalil's equation because of her reputaion in Jalil's house. She was the daughter a wife that Jalil was not proud of, and Jalil's current wives did not approve of their shack lifestyle. The wives, Khadija and Nagris, we're determind to stop mariam from living in their house, unwanted, even after the passing of Nana, the wives regard it as an "ordeal" (46), rather than a tragic loss for Mariam. Mariam tries to live with Mullah Faizullah when she realizes they are trying to remove her from their situation, but the wives assert that she would be a burden to his family "as you are now to us" (48), Mariam hears their thought in her head. The wives try to cut off all connections that Mariam has to Jalil, and they succeed in getting rid of her until later in the novel when Jalil attempts to contact Mariam. The actions by Jalil's wives stop Jalil and Mariam's relationship that would have blossomed had she stayed living in their house.
